A puzzle with frequent small rewards is one that will be played in a similar manner in short, entertaining bursts. Keeping the principle of simplicity in the forefront, Linelight is perhaps the simplest presentation one can imagine. A simple line and cursor, moving into the unknown. You command the cursor to move and you choose when there are branches, but the ultimate destination is darkness. Move by tap and drag, stop by lifting your finger. Linelight's challenges build from a set of primitives demonstrated in the tutorial. Because of this I expected repetition to be a problem, but the number of ways to combine switches, gates, and platforms makes each challenge both fresh and familiar. One outstanding feature, and I can't believe how impressed I am by this, is the familiar 'rate this game' interaction. This has been a nag box since the beginning, but Linelight manages to integrate it into the game. Insignificant as it is, it shows the devs commitment to the aesthetic, their deep understanding of how to nurture that valuable, fragile relationship between the player and the game.
